At 31 years old, the São Paulo native from Taubaté began training muay thai at the age of 15. The welterweight athlete (up to 77kg) competed in several striking tournaments in Brazil and Thailand, until he decided to move to MMA in 2012.
After 21 professional fights and a six-fight winning streak, Prates was given a chance to pursue a UFC contract by participating in the seventh season of 'Dana White's Contender Series' and did not disappoint.
He drew attention after winning Mitch Ramirez by technical knockout in the 2nd round, receiving praise from Dana White, who compared him to the legendary Anderson Silva.
