Although they attend the same gym, Usman said he is not Rakhmonov's training partner. Therefore, this would not be an obstacle for the two to share the octagon at the event on December 7, in Las Vegas Valley.
“First of all, I want to make one thing clear: We are not teammates. He comes and trains at my gym, where I’ve been for most of my career, the last four or five years. That’s where I still am. That’s the gym, but he’s not my teammate per se,” the former welterweight champion said on his podcast. Pound-4-Pound.
In the online program he shares with Henry Cejudo, the Nigerian recalled occasions when he accepted fights with much less preparation time and fired a 'they know who to call' directed at the organization.
“If the UFC is going to call who they think is really tough and man enough to step into the Octagon, is crazy to go up there on such short notice and probably shock the world, they know who to call,” said Kamaru.
In search of redemption
The 'Nigerian Nightmare' is looking for an opportunity to prove himself and taste victory again. Having not fought this year, Usman is on a bad streak. He suffered two consecutive losses to his rival Leon Edward and lost the trilogy. The fighter also suffered a defeat to Khamzat Shimaev No. UFC 294, in October of last year.
