Recent statements from Jon Jones pointing out Alex Poatán as the only opponent of interest were not enough to discourage Tom aspinall in relation to a possible duel for the unification of the linear and interim heavyweight belts (up to 120,2 kg).
In an interview with journalist Ariel Helwani, the interim champion said he believed that Jon Jones still wishes, albeit secretly, to face him.

“I think he secretly wants to [fight me]. He has a huge ego. And he should! He’s one of the best in history and he hates the fact that people are saying I’d beat him. He doesn’t sleep at night. He does all this stuff, he says he doesn’t care about me, that he’s better than me and all that, but it’s all projection. Deep down he knows he needs to say it to defend himself. Jon is a fierce competitor. You can see it in the way he fights and talks. I don’t watch interviews, but I see bits and pieces and I know my existence hurts his feelings a lot,” the Brit teased.
If the duel actually comes to fruition, Tom aspinall believes it has an important advantage over Jon Jones: the fact that there is not much material to be studied due to the short time in the octagon, as it has the lowest average time per fight in the history of the UFC.
“One of the great advantages of Jon Jones “The thing about everyone is that he’s a video student. He loves to study his opponents. He’s not going to get a chance to do that with me because my average UFC fight time is 2 minutes and 10 seconds. That’s the thing that keeps him awake. I’m a giant question mark to him. And I know a lot about his game. He’s been in the Octagon for many years. He doesn’t have anything on me other than videos of me ripping heads off in the Octagon. He doesn’t know how to prepare,” he concluded.
