A doubt has been taking over the UFC heavyweight category (up to 120,2 kg) since the creation of the interim belt. Tom aspinall captured the title with the injury of Jon Jones in November 2023. The British man successfully defended the belt against Curtis blaydes in July of this year, but has not yet had the opportunity to unify it. Amid controversy, Demetrious Johnson, former flyweight champion (up to 56,7 kg.) speculated about the possible fight.

"I Think Tom aspinall has the speed, athleticism and power to cause problems for Jon Jones. Tom aspinall is still young and improving, Aspinall can beat him. I feel comfortable saying that just because you have someone who will take the fight to Jon Jones and not be afraid. Now, can he face one of those elbows, or a flying knee? One thousand percent,” said Mighty Mouse, during a video on his YouTube channel.

Since the consecration of Tom aspinall as interim champion, Bones has already declared not have interest in fighting. The American knocked out Stipe Miocic in the main fight of UFC 309, dismissed retirement rumors and reiterated his desire to leave Aspinall aside and face Alex Poatán. However, Dana White stated at the post-event press conference that a unification is the most likely next step.
