What is the UFC medical protocol for post-knockout situations?
The UFC’s guidelines emphasize initial rest, followed by a phased rehabilitation program. Fighters suspected of having a concussion should begin with a minimum of two days of complete rest, followed by two stages of non-contact training. During this phase, athletes will undergo regular assessments using the SCAT5 tool, a questionnaire that assesses concussion symptoms.
The UFC concussion protocol requires fighters to be monitored by a healthcare professional during their recovery to ensure safe progression to return to play. The return to play protocol is similar to the NFL concussion protocol.
If the athlete has other symptoms, there is the possibility of further tests to monitor possible problems. Recovery also includes a period of up to two days of physical and mental rest, including long-term sleep.
