What was speculation is now a fact. On the night of last Wednesday (4), through a post on social media, Dana White confirmed that Islam Makhachev and Arman Tsarukyan will face each other for the lightweight belt (up to 70,3 kg) in the main fight of UFC 311 , the first numbered event of 2025, scheduled for January 18, in Los Angeles, United States.
Champion since October 2022, when he submitted Charles Oliveira in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, Islam Makhachev seeks to become the first fighter to defend the lightweight belt four times. The Russian defended the title twice against Alexander Volkanovski and, most recently, against Dustin Poirier at UFC 302 in June of this year.

On the other side, Arman Tsarukyan arrives for his first UFC title fight with the number one ranking and a four-fight winning streak, the last of which was against former champion Charles Oliveira at the historic UFC 300 in April of this year.
The fight between Makhachev and Tsarukyan is a rematch. The two faced each other for the first time in April 2019, in the Armenian's debut in the organization. On that occasion, the current champion emerged victorious by unanimous decision.
