It seems that the 'Nigerian Nightmare' is no longer so feared in the UFC's welterweight division (up to 77 kg). After exchanging barbs with Ian Garry, Kamaru Usman was once again the target of another young rising star in the category. The former champion was challenged by Joaquin buckley after American victory at UFC Tampa. The Nigerian replied.
On his podcast 'Pound 4 Pound', alongside Henry Cejudo, Usman reinforced that he will only fight again when he is 100% healthy and prepared. The former champion stated that he does not care who his next opponent will be, but will only fight when he is in ideal conditions.

“It feels like no one is listening to what I’m saying. No one is understanding what I’m saying. Shavkat, Belal, Ian, Buckley, Jack. It doesn’t matter who it is. One thing I’m not going to do, and I’ve done it for a long time and too much, which is partly why I’m having to take this break, is compete when I’m not ready. When I’m healthy, it doesn’t matter who it is,” Usman said.
Kamaru Usman has not stepped into the octagon since his loss to Khamzat Shimaev in 2023. Although he was a dominant champion, the Nigerian has not won a match since 2021 and has accumulated a three-game losing streak since being dethroned by Leon edwards.
