Even at 37 years old, Kamaru Usman doesn't seem to be showing any signs of slowing down. A former UFC welterweight champion (up to 77,1 kg) between 2019 and 2021, the fighter has a few options for his return to MMA, and Jack Della Maddalena seems to be at the top of the list, at least at the moment.
In an interview with the North American website MainEventTV, the athlete spoke about the state of the category and referred directly to the possibility of facing one of the sensations in the welterweight division (up to 77,1 kg).
Despite making clear the need for ideal preparation for the confrontation, the Nigerian Nightmare praised Della Maddalena's stance and showed interest in a duel in early 2025.
“I’ve seen some interviews of him wanting this fight, and that’s great. In his position, that’s what you do. You call the biggest name in the division to get to the next level. At the end of the day, it’s my turn now. It’s time to be honest with myself, and if I’m ready to go out there and do it, then absolutely. I’ve been through guys in this division. It doesn’t matter who it is. As long as I’m ready, I’m going to go in there and test him. It’s a few months until February, so I don’t know,” Usman said.
Kamaru Usman is not having a good time
Owner of the second longest winning streak in the organization's history, Kamaru Usman is going through a negative moment. After being knocked out by Leon edwards No. UFC 278 and lose once again in the rematch, the Nigerian was outclassed by Khamzat Shimaev in October 2023, by unanimous decision. This is the worst series of results in the fighter's entire career.
