The UFC's light heavyweight division (up to 93 kg) is experiencing days of great expectation, especially with the future of Alex Poatán and his moves regarding his next opponent. Recently, the Brazilian caused a stir when he spoke out on social media about ruling out a fight against Magomed Ankalayev. The Brazilian's positioning generated a series of speculations, with the possible name of Khamzat Shimaev, and the former middleweight champion (up to 83,9 kg.), Robert whittaker, analyzed the possibility.
In an interview with the 'MMArcade Podcast', Whittaker was cautious, but also brought up an intriguing view on a possible fight between Chimaev and Poatan. The Australian stated that, if the Russian moved up to light heavyweight to challenge the champion, he would be the favorite, but could face difficulties, especially in the exchange with the Brazilian.

“I’ve seen the rumors. Chimaev goes up and takes on Poatan. Imagine that. Chimaev wins. Unless the dynamics of Alex being heavier change the fact that Chimaev can get the takedown without any problems. He’s good at what he does, at following the strategy. But let’s say, hypothetically, Chimaev ‘dies on the gas’ just a little bit. Poatan wins. He kills Chimaev that way, in the exchange,” Whittaker opined.
Whittaker's analysis highlights a relevant point in the current UFC light heavyweight landscape: while Chimaev is widely recognized for his ability to impose his pace and dominant wrestling, the former middleweight champion believes his stamina could be a crucial factor if the fight goes the distance.
Poatan keeps his future in the UFC a mystery
Whittaker's provocation is especially pertinent because Poatan, in a recent social media post, ruled out a possible confrontation with Magomed Ankalayev, who had been speculated as the next title challenger.
The Brazilian's refusal prompted a response from Ankalaev, who accused the champion of 'running away' from the challenge, calling him a 'chicken', a term used in MMA to describe fighters who avoid direct confrontation with opponents considered more dangerous.
