Former UFC fighter Matt Mendonça, known as 'Bocão', had to undergo emergency surgery after fracturing his penis. The incident occurred during a jiu-jitsu training session in São Luís, Maranhão, the athlete's hometown. He was kneed in the pelvic region and ended up fracturing his penis.
Due to the injury, Bocão will probably be out of action for at least two months. According to the athlete, his training partner ended up hitting him in the private parts while trying to pass the guard. Mendonça says he felt a lot of pain at the time and also when he went to the bathroom, but that the pain soon went away. A month later, in São Paulo, the fighter felt some complications and felt a lump in the area. That's when he went to the hospital and the doctor sent him for emergency surgery.

After the scare, the man from Maranhão issued a warning and reinforced the importance of using a cup, a piece of equipment that guarantees the protection of the genital organ, during training. The accessory is mandatory in MMA fights.
“It’s a good idea to warn everyone – all the guys who train jiu-jitsu, grappling, MMA, anything that involves contact: wear a cup to avoid accidents. From now on, I can do any training, I won’t train without a cup anymore (laughs). You have to be careful. It doesn’t hurt, it prevents accidents, it prevents a lot of things. I used to spar and I wasn’t used to wearing a cup, or any training. Almost no one has the habit of training with a cup, they only wear it when they’re going to fight. I’m going to tell everyone now: wear a cup in any situation,” he said.
Due to the long period he will be away from the sport, Bocão decided to hold a raffle to lessen the impact on his financial life. He will raffle off a pair of shorts, a shirt, a glove and a UFC flyer. So far, he has raised around R$1,5.
