Current lightweight champion (up to 70,3 kg) and in a great phase in his career, Islam makhachev spoke again about possible retirement, and despite having achieved the target set at the beginning of 2024, the athlete continues to rule out any possibility of hanging up his gloves in the near future. In the Russian representative's view, age will not be the factor that will determine the end of his journey.
“I wouldn’t say it’s that bad; if I feel like I’ve stopped (developing), then that’s it, I have to stop. No, (there’s no age in mind), I don’t associate anything with age. (Artur) Beterbiev is 39 years old and he’s the best boxer in the world. Years are not the limit. I don’t have any number (of titles) in mind,” Islam said during an interview with Blood Elbow.

Continuing his speech, Islam highlighted his routine with younger athletes and reflected on the scenario that will help him see a possible drop in performance as an MMA fighter.
“I train with a lot of young people at the gym. If I realize that I can’t keep up with the pace, that they are catching up to me, overtaking me, why should I torture myself? (Then) I stop,” he concluded.

At 33 years old, Makhachev is preparing for his fourth title defense in the lightweight division. Scheduled to face Arman Tsarukyan No. UFC 311, on January 18, the fighter could become the record holder for the most defenses in the division if he lives up to his favoritism against his former victim. The duel will take place in Los Angeles and marks a reunion after five years since their first fight.
