One of the main names in UFC 314, which takes place this Saturday (12) at the Kaseya Center, in Miami, Diego lopes embodies a story of divided identity. The Brazilian, who faces the former champion Alexander Volkanovsky for the vacant featherweight belt (up to 65,7 kg), he carries with him not only the Brazilian flag, but also that of Mexico — the country that welcomed him and transformed his career in MMA.

Born in Manaus, Diego left Brazil in 2015 to teach jiu-jitsu in Puebla, Mexico, where he built a solid career and a deep connection with the local culture. Today, based in the country, he trains at Lobo Gym, a gym that is also home to the former flyweight champion (up to 56,7 kg). Alexa grasso, and does not hide his pride in representing both nations.
“I have Brazilian blood and a Mexican heart. Mexico adopted me and was the bridge to get to the UFC,” declared the fighter in an interview with 'UmDois Esportes'.
The speech reflects years of challenges, from the defeat in Dana White's Contender Series in 2021 to the meteoric rise in the Ultimate, with five consecutive victories, including quick knockouts and submissions. The duality, however, was not always well received by the Brazilian public. In an interview with the Sexto Round channel, Lopes addressed the criticism.
“It goes in one ear and out the other. I know what I went through and what Mexico did for me. When I asked for help from Brazil, it was denied; here, I received support,” he added.
With a record of 26 wins and 6 losses, Lopes stands out for his refined jiu-jitsu — a legacy of training that began at the age of 5 — and for his surprising striking power. His UFC debut, in May 2023, was marked by a tough fight against Movsar Evloev, even without ideal preparation.
Since then, the athlete has accumulated impressive performances, such as the knockout in Sodiq Yusuf No. UFC 300, and the victory over Brian ortega No. UFC 306, which put him at the top of the division. Now, facing Volkanovski, considered one of the greatest in the history of featherweight, Diego faces his definitive challenge.
Does Diego Lopes speak badly of Brazil?
While preparing the fight, Diego lopes also faces questions about his loyalty. Renato Moicano, fighter and commentator for the organization, recognized his talent, but criticized his stance towards Brazil.
""Diego lopes he's a really good guy, five wins and one loss in the UFC. But I don't know, I have my reservations with him Diego lopes because he defends Mexico a lot, you know? He has every right, but then he talks bad about 'Bostil' to speak well of Mexico? Mexico is much worse than 'Bostil', are you kidding, man. Jokes aside, he is an excellent fighter”, said Moicano.
Riding a five-game winning streak, Diego faces Volkanovski this Saturday (12) in the main fight of the UFC 314. Scheduled to take place in Miami (USA), the fight will be valid for the vacant featherweight title.
