Former welterweight champion (up to 77,1kg) and keeping an eye on the arrival of Islam makhachev to his ancient kingdom, Kamaru Usman came forward and made an unusual challenge to the Russian. Despite coming off three consecutive defeats, the Nigerian opened the door for a possible confrontation against the current number one in the pound-for-pound ranking, but avoided any provocation to create rivalry.
“It would obviously be a profitable fight. Former number one in the pound-for-pound rankings against the current pound-for-pound champion. I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t happen. Islam and I are mature enough to have that conversation,” Usman said during an appearance on the Pound4Pound Podcast.

Scheduled to appear on June 14th in the main event of the UFC Atlanta, Usman prepares to end a nearly two-year inactivity. Scheduled to face Joaquin buckley, the Nigerian seeks to return to winning ways after a defeat to Khamzat Shimaev in a clash held in Abu Dhabi. The former champion currently occupies third place in the category ranking.
On the other hand, Makhachev still depends on Dana White's approval to be able to move to welterweight and face Jack Della Maddalena next. The Russian's intention is to continue defending his lightweight title (up to 70,3 kg) while venturing into the higher division.
