UFC Legend Chael Sonnen Apologizes for 'Acting Like a Maniac' in the Past

Former fighter was involved in a dispute in December 2021 and yesterday (21) apologized to those affected

Chael Sonnen opened up about a controversial episode he experienced in 2021. A big name in the UFC, the former athlete was arrested at the Four Seasons hotel in Las Vegas after an argument with a couple. The two claimed that Sonnen appeared to be drunk and simply snatched a drink from the husband's hand. An employee at the hotel also claimed that he was punched by the former fighter.

The American later pleaded guilty to only one of the charges: disturbing the peace. He had been charged with 10 counts, including assault by strangulation. As punishment, the Ultimate commentator received a fine of US$750,00 (around R$4.230,00, at the current exchange rate). On Wednesday (21), he sought to apologize.

“Dr. Chris and his wife Julie Stellpflug, Mr. and Mrs. Stellpflug, a few years ago in Las Vegas, were walking down a hallway trying to get to their room and encountered a maniac, me, and I apologize. I have wanted to apologize for several years, but it just wasn’t right. It’s a complex situation, it takes time, but I have to say that this has been bothering me,” Sonnen said in a statement. post on Instagram.

“I would like to extend this apology to their children. Children were not present, but I have children. Reverse the roles and think of me as a child with my own parents. Their parents are bombarded by the media and a lawsuit because they encounter a crazy person while doing what they should be doing in the hallway, which is going to their room. I have to tell you: you deserve an apology, and I sincerely apologize to you.”
