The history between the two rivals is marked by rivalry and cancellations. Originally scheduled to lead the UFC 303 In June 2024, the fight was canceled after McGregor suffered a fractured little toe during training. Alex Poatán replaced the 'Notorious' and won Jiri Prochazka in the main fight of the night.

The saga began when Chandler and McGregor were announced as coaches for The Ultimate Fighter 31 in 2023. The rivalry was expected to culminate in the octagon, but bureaucratic issues, including the controversy between the UFC and USADA over the Irishman's return to doping testing, postponed the plans. Conor, who has not competed since July 2021, when he fractured his tibia against Dustin poirier, has only two fights remaining on his contract with the organization.

Since then, both have tried to renegotiate the fight, in December 2024 and at 'International Fight Week', in July this year. Dana White, however, ruled out any fight between Conor.

Chandler, in turn, faced a long period of inactivity while waiting for the fight, but gave up waiting and has already entered the octagon on two occasions. The impression, however, was not good. 'Iron' had two fights, against Charles of the Bronx e Paddy Pimblett, but was defeated in both.
