B.J. Penn was arrested for the third time in less than a week this Friday (30), after failing to comply with a court agreement related to accusations of assault against his own mother. The Hawaiian Court simultaneously rejected the fighter's request for a protective measure against Lorraine Shin, 79, while granting the elderly woman a restraining order valid for six months against her son. The information was released by the Hawaiian TV channel 'KHON2'.

The third arrest, on May 30, was due to his absence from a mandatory hearing to determine the case. The former fighter, a member of the UFC Hall of Fame, gave the reason for his absence as a result of a COVID-19 diagnosis. The argument was ultimately rejected by the court.

Penn requested a restraining order against Shin, claiming she was an "impostor" who murdered her royal family to control their assets. Judge Jeffrey Ng denied the request for lack of grounds, according to a ruling cited in the court records.

Meanwhile, the mother's petition was successful. The order requires the fighter to maintain a minimum distance of 30 meters from his mother, prohibits any contact and orders him to appear at a new hearing on June 10. Violations imply criminal liability.

Medical reports presented by Lorraine Shin to the court indicate a presumed diagnosis of Capgras syndrome, a rare psychiatric disorder that generates a delusional belief that family members have been replaced by look-alikes. The condition explains the athlete's recurring posts on social media, in which he accuses his mother and siblings of being 'actors' involved in asset fraud.

BJ Penn's other arrests

A first arrest occurred on May 25, after Shin reported a physical confrontation with his son. Released on $2 bail, Penn was arrested again on May 26 for violating a restraining order issued after the initial incident.
