In the face of speculation, Alex Poatán explained, in an interview during the broadcast of UFC 316, that his recent absence from the octagon generated strangeness because the public got used to seeing him fighting frequently, something unusual among fighters.

The Brazilian suggests that Magomed Ankalayev is using his name to gain visibility, since the public does not know him. Poatan says he understands the provocations as a self-promotion strategy and, therefore, prefers not to respond at the moment, but guarantees that, at the right time, he will speak out.

After winning the belt and defending it three times in a six-month period, Alex Poatán returned to the octagon to face Magomed Ankalayev in the UFC, but ended up being defeated by unanimous decision of the judges.
