Alex Poatán finds motivation in the path traced by his greatest rival, Israel adesanya, to regain the UFC light heavyweight belt (up to 93kg). In an interview with journalist Caroline Pearce, the Brazilian recalled the rivalry and was categorical about the symbolic value of the Nigerian's persistent trajectory in the organization.

“This happens not only in fighting, but in other professions. There are people who get discouraged, who think they can’t start over. But taking Adesanya as an example: he lost to me, but he came back and won back the belt. I use this to show that no one should give up,” said Poatan.

The direct reference refers to Adesanya's victory in the UFC 287, when he knocked out Poatan after three previous defeats (two in kickboxing, one in MMA).

Alex lost the light heavyweight belt to Ankalaev at UFC 313 by unanimous decision and ended an 11-month reign with three successful defenses. Despite the defeat, his performance left positive signs, as he blocked 100% of his opponent's 12 takedown attempts.

The rematch is being negotiated, but there is still no date for it to take place. Alex Poatán wants to return to action between September and November and see Magomed Ankalayev as the only possible opponent. However, the Russian has already shown himself willing to face other fighters to remain active within Dana White's company.
