After retirement, José Aldo admits he spent five years without training for UFC fights

Even in his last fights, the former champion ignored specific takedown training

José Aldo ended his career in UFC 315, in May, under the aura of legend, but a technical detail went unnoticed. In the last five years, the former featherweight champion (65,7 kg.) without including specific wrestling training in his routine, and persisted until his definitive farewell.

“Everyone keeps asking me about it — even the people I train with. First of all, I haven’t trained wrestling in 5 years,” Aldo said in an interview with 'MMA Hoje'.

Previously, Aldo cited 'health issues' and mental strain during the weight cut against Aiemann Zahabi as decisive factors for his retirement. The manaus native did not mention his absence from wrestling. Data from his fights, however, seems to have had no effect.

Before Merab Dvalishvili, Mario Bautista and Aiemann Zahabi, fighters who beat him by unanimous decision, the 'People's Champion' showed quality in defending takedowns, but did not have the reaction to get off the fence and reposition himself for a standing fight, which would have given him greater balance in relation to his opponents. They all adopted the same style to beat him.
