In preparation for his debut at welterweight (up to 77,1kg) next, Javier Mendez believes that Islam makhachev be more than ready to face not only Jack Della Maddalena, but also heavier fighters. Witnessing all of his pupil's training, the coach looks favorably on the duel against the champion and does not hesitate to state that his athlete can beat him in stand-up fighting, the Australian's specialty.

“I used to let Islam spar with guys at that weight all the time, the best guys at 77 pounds, and he beat them all. He won’t have any problems at 77 pounds. 84 pounds might be a bit difficult because they’re much bigger. But 77 pounds has never been a problem for him. I think Islam will definitely have an advantage over Jack on the ground, but we could very well beat him in the stand-up fight as well, so let’s see what happens,” Javier said in an interview with Genting Casino.

Finally, Mendes admitted that exhaustive training is necessary to deal with someone like Maddalena.

“Jack is such a tough opponent that we can’t analyze and think that we are better in a specific area. We will have to prove that we are better and train hard in all these areas,” he concluded.
