In the main fight UFC 317, scheduled for June 28, during International Struggle Week, Ilia Topuria has the chance to make history by winning his second Ultimate title. However, to buckle on the new belt, the Spaniard needs to pass a test that his rival, charles do brox, got a grade 10: adaptation to a new category.

Like Topuria, Charles was a featherweight athlete (up to 65,7 kg) who had difficulty reaching the weight limit for the category. However, by moving up in weight and adapting, Do Bronx achieved an excellent sequence of victories until win the belt.

In an interview with MMA Fighting, Charles explained that, at first, he was reluctant to move up to lightweight (up to 70,2kg). However, when he changed categories, he clearly noticed the difference in strength and power in his punches.

“It took me a while to understand that, mainly because you know I didn’t want to go back to the lightweight division. When I came back I felt the difference in punching power, grappling and strength and I moved up,” said Do Bronx.

With the experience of having competed in two categories, Do Bronx is well aware of the challenges of the adaptation process. According to the former champion, the first fights after changing divisions tend to be easier, but over time, the athlete begins to gain mass to adjust physically and, consequently, the weight cut becomes more difficult and tiring. Already well adapted to 70 kg, Charles admits that he has even considered moving up again, this time to welterweight (up to 77 kg).

“The first fight is easy, the second one too. After that, you’ve already gained weight and you have more to cut because you want to get stronger too. I think it varies from person to person… I was talking yesterday about maybe going to welterweight, but it’s a bit complicated.” Charles Oliveira concluded.
