Jon Jones' historic rival Daniel Cormier raises his voice in reaction to the fighter's retirement

The UFC commentator claimed that his former opponent 'gave up' by not facing Tom Aspinall

Daniel Cormier wasted no time. As soon as was announced the retirement of Jon Jones, the historic rival spoke about the fact that the big name left the octagon without facing the then interim champion of the heavyweight division (up to 120,2 kg.) Tom aspinall. The end of Jones' career was announced this Saturday (21) by Dana White at a press conference after the UFC Baku. English is the linear champion of the category now.

“I said, 'If Jon Jones don't fight this guy, Jon Jones get out'. Because he's going to walk away from something that has defined his entire adult life... by not stepping into that octagon, he gave up. He didn't want to fight with Tom aspinall.”, he fired Daniel Cormier No. 'ESPN MMA'.

At 37, Jon Jones ended his career with a record of 28 wins, one loss by disqualification and one no-contest fight, cementing his status as one of the greatest fighters in the history of MMA. He started in MMA in 2008, made a quick debut in the UFC and in March 2011, at the age of 23 years and eight months, became the youngest champion in UFC history. At light heavyweight, he defended the belt 11 times. He moved up to the heavyweight division (up to 120,2 kg) and submitted Cyryl Gane in 2023, winning the belt in the new category. In November 2024, he knocked out Stipe Miocic in his first and only heavyweight title defense, reaffirming his legendary legacy.

Tom aspinall se manifested on social media minutes after announcing his retirement. In publication short, the new linear champion promised an active reign in the category.

“For you fans, it’s time to get this heavyweight division moving. An active linear champion,” wrote the Briton when posting the video of Dana White’s statement.
