The Russian's reign in the lightweight division (up to 70,3 kg) began with a victory against Alexander Volkanovsky by unanimous decision in Australia. The two faced each other again in UFC 294, with another successful defense, this time by technical knockout in the first round.
Islam fought an intense duel against Poirier in June last year. After four rounds of war, the athlete emerged victorious once again with a triangle choke in the last round.
