The Brazilian Jonathan Diniz defeated Alvin Hines by unanimous decision in the first fight of the preliminary card of UFC 317, in a duel valid for the heavyweight category (up to 120,2 kg). With the triumph, he recovered from the setback against Marcin tybura and achieved his third victory in the biggest MMA organization in the world.

Diniz began the first few minutes of the fight moving sideways and studying his opponent, while Hines tried to dominate the center of the octagon and land punches with his right hand, in addition to trying to take him down at times. Despite absorbing some good blows, the Brazilian was successful in causing damage to his opponent. The American ended the first round with a swollen right eye and a lot of blood from his nose.
Hines came out more aggressive in the second round, combining strong punches with takedowns. The fighter from Curitiba defended attempts to take the fight to the ground and landed strong counterattacks on his opponent, who was left stunned after being hit by a left cross.
The American came for all or nothing in the last round. Amidst his aggression, he ended up committing a foul by putting his finger in the Brazilian's eye. After recovering, Diniz began to manage the result intelligently and only reacted to the attacks with precision.
At the end of the 15 minutes of combat, Jonathan Diniz declared the winner by unanimous decision of the judges, with all scoring 29 to 28 in his favor.
