Dana White reveals UFC supported Ben Askren after lung transplant

The MMA world was surprised in recent days by the serious health condition of Ben Askren. The 40-year-old American, a former UFC, ONE, and Bellator fighter, faced severe pneumonia associated with a staphylococcal bacterial infection. The condition led to a double lung transplant and, according to Askren himself, he 'died' four times during the process.

Given the seriousness of the case, expressions of support began to emerge, including from the top echelons of MMA. In a press conference after UFC Nashville , Dana White confirmed that he offered help to the former athlete. The UFC president stated that he contacted Askren's family as soon as he learned of the situation, although he preferred not to reveal details as it was a personal matter.

"Yeah, I don't usually talk about this kind of stuff, but yeah, I helped. I did, I mean, we... We contacted his wife as soon as we found out... I just don't like to talk about this kind of shit. That's between us," said Dana White.

Ben Askren claims he 'died' four times

In a video recently posted to social media, Askren revealed that he doesn't remember anything between May 28th and July 2nd, a period during which his health rapidly deteriorated. He reported that he "died four times" during treatment, including one episode in which his heart stopped for about 20 seconds.

"I just read my wife's diary because I don't remember anything from May 28th to July 2nd. I don't remember anything. I have no idea what happened. Let's just kind of go through it all. I just read my wife's diary. It's like a movie. It's ridiculous," Askren said.

Additionally, he lost about 22 pounds in just 45 days, weighing 66 pounds for the first time since he was 15.

Ben Askren's wife started a crowdfunding campaign online

Askren's wife, Amy, was instrumental throughout the process, sharing updates with fans and thanking the donor and his family for their generosity.

She also started a fundraising campaign to cover medical costs, which can exceed $300 in the United States.

Ben Askren is part of the select group of fighters who arrived at the UFC with star status. The American debuted in the organization undefeated, after reigning in ONE Championship. In his first fight in the world's most famous octagon, the wrestling specialist submitted former champion Robbie Lawler . However, he subsequently suffered a brutal knockout with a flying knee from Jorge Masvidal and was then submitted by Demian Maia , ending his time in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
