Currently ranked first in the UFC lightweight rankings (up to 70,3 kg), Arman Tsarukyan has been making noise to get his dream title fight in the category. Despite his attempts, the fighter is being punished by Dana White, due to the sudden cancellation, on the eve of the UFC 311, where he would face Islam makhachev.
Keeping an eye on the situation, Cormier decided to take a stand and did not hesitate in defending the legitimacy of the Armenian being the next challenger. Ilia Topuria, who is currently the linear champion of the category.

“I’m not saying Arman is the guy who always messes up and doesn’t step on the scale or fight. That happened once. He shouldn’t be judged on just that one time, especially after making weight and preparing to fight as a backup fighter in the last fight. It should be Arman vs. Ilia, and I think there’s no doubt about that, but I think the problem with that is the last memory of [Topuria] and Paddy Pimblett in the octagon,” Cormier declared on the show 'Good Guy/Bad Guy'.
The moment Cormier is referring to was when Topuria and Pimblett faced off in the Octagon, after the Spanish-Georgian won the title in UFC 317. Joe Rogan, the organization's commentator, invited the Englishman to perform, and the crowd at T-Mobile Arena went wild. At the time, Dana White expressed dissatisfaction with the move and questioned whether 'Baddy' would actually be the next challenger.
