Towards the welterweight title fight (up to 77,1 kg), Islam makhachev has decided to abdicate his lightweight throne (up to 70,3 kg) to venture into a new category. Determined to fulfill his dream of winning another title before hanging up his gloves, the Russian is confidently preparing to face Jack Della Maddalena, in a likely event to be held in November, in New York, according to Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Aware of the situation and willing to question the reality of the former champion's career, Chael Sonnen began to think about possible unforeseen circumstances Makhachev might encounter in his plans. In a statement given by the veteran, the question of what will happen to the Russian if he loses his next fight was raised.

"What an incredibly difficult situation to put Islam in. If he loses, will you race back to 70kg, which, by the way, isn't the same as you left; there's a new king. Or will you start reclaiming your place at 77kg? It's an interesting question. I don't believe Islam's team is thinking about that. I believe they're hoping to win," Sonnen said on his YouTube channel.

While not underestimating Della Maddalena, the coach has already expressed interest in watching Islam face Ilia Topuria in his next fight, if the Spanish-Georgian accepts to move up a category to seek his third title in his career with the organization.
