Aspinall won the undisputed heavyweight belt in June 2025, following the official retirement of Jon Jones, with whom he had been waiting for a superfight for over a year. The frustration of not facing the American seems to have changed the Englishman's mindset, who is now aiming for a more active and frequent schedule in the octagon.

The fight against Gane marks the reunion of two of the biggest names in the new generation of heavyweights. According to Aspinall, this will be the UFC's fourth attempt to arrange the fight, with previous refusals attributed to the Frenchman due to scheduling conflicts, including commitments to film a Netflix series.
