Close to UFC 319, Chimaev provokes Poatan again and says he would accept a fight: 'With or without a belt'

Even with his eye on the belt at UFC 319, the Chechen says he is willing to face Poatan with or without the title at stake.

Close to competing for the middleweight title (up to 83,9 kg) in UFC 319, Khamzat Shimaev rekindled an old rivalry that seemed dormant. In an interview with the Jaxxon Podcast, the Chechen mentioned Alex Poatán as a possible opponent, regardless of the Brazilian's status as champion, as long as the Ultimate rewards him financially.

“It depends on whether he wins (Magomed Ankalayev No. UFC 320"Let's see. Actually, win or lose, if they (UFC) think it's a good fight and offer good money, I'll fight him. Why not?", Chimaev stated bluntly.

The statement is surprising given the timing: Chimaev is on the eve of one of the most important fights of his career, but he still shows interest in moving up to face Poatan, who is preparing for a rematch against Magomed Ankalayev No. UFC 320.

The rivalry between Chimaev and Poatan goes back a long way.

The mention of Alex Poatán, however, draws attention and reignites an old rivalry. Since 2022, the two have exchanged barbs on social media and in interviews. Soon after UFC 276, Chimaev posted in a defiant tone.

“I want to fight this guy. Let’s make it happen,” he said of the Brazilian, who had knocked him out. Sean Strickland. Poatan, in turn, responded to Chimaev and called him a 'coward seeking attention' and rejecting the fight at that moment.

The exchange of provocations continued in the following months, with accusations of refusal to fight and provocations on social media, such as the one made by Chimaev in February this year, when he posted a screenshot of Poatan's loss to Adesanya with the ironic caption: “Wake up, 'Flame'.”
