Jon Jones had his misdemeanor charges dropped after being identified as someone allegedly involved in a traffic accident that occurred in February of this year, in the state of New Mexico (USA). The information was confirmed by his lawyer, Christopher Dodd, who released a statement this Tuesday (2) and assured that the American was acquitted.

According to the defense, the accusation came from a woman involved in the accident, who claimed that Jones was behind the wheel and fled the scene. Police initially accepted the witness's account, which, according to documents, showed signs of severe intoxication and was naked from the waist down, but subsequent investigation revealed serious inconsistencies in her account.

"From the beginning, we explained that a woman made a false accusation against Jon to avoid a DWI arrest, and unfortunately, the police accepted this allegation without properly assessing the facts. When the relevant documents were finally released, Jon's cell phone records unequivocally showed that he was nowhere near the scene of the accident," Dodd said in the statement.

The New Mexico State Attorney's Office has officially filed a motion for dismissal of the case. According to the document signed by Attorney Joshua D. Boone, Jones's alibi-based defense was deemed credible, leading to the case being dismissed.

"After further investigation, the State believes the defendant's alibi defense is credible. Therefore, the case is closed," the official statement reads.

The trial was scheduled to take place on Tuesday, but was canceled after the request to dismiss the case was filed last Friday (30). Jones' legal team says it will continue to investigate how the complaint was initially accepted, alleging possible improper motivation by local police.
