Mauricio Ruffy recalls the reality check he got when he joined Fighting Nerd: 'We don't want rotten fruit'

Mauricio Ruffy didn't have an easy life when he decided to join the Fighting Nerds team. The fighter, who enters the action in UFC Paris next Saturday (6), he is one of the main names of the São Paulo team within the Ultimate, but he had to sweat to gain the trust of the coaches.

In an interview with UFC Brazil, Ruffy humorously recalled his arrival at Fighting Nerd. He revealed that he arrived confident and certain he would be part of the team, but encountered a strict approach from coach Pablo Sucupira, who imposed clear rules for his entry into the team.

"It was actually funny the day I arrived at Fighting Nerd. Every gym I went to, people wanted me to train there, they wanted to give me a scholarship and all that, and then I arrived at Fighting Nerd with my chest puffed out, really big, to watch the training. I said, 'Pablo, I came to wear your jersey; from today on, I'm going to be a Fighting Nerd.' Then Pablo replied, 'Wait, what do you mean? It's like this: 30 training sessions. If you miss one, you don't have to come back here. The locker room is back there. I don't want any rotten fruit in my fruit stand, okay?'" said Ruffy.

At the time, Ruffy was 21 years old and had a record of six wins and one loss, and he was impressed by Pablo's serious approach. The fighter acknowledged that the coach's discipline and professionalism were crucial to his development in the octagon.

"I was already 21 years old. I was already 6-1 at the time, you know? I was, I was doing really well. And then I really liked his approach. I said, 'Wow, this guy is serious.' We've been together for a little over 6 years," said the Fighting Nerd representative.
