Having lost their last three fights against their top athletes, Fighting Nerds has become the target of harsh criticism and questioning from fans and sports professionals alike. Voted Gym of the Year in 2024, the Brazilian team is now seeking changes to get back to winning ways in the next appearances of its ranked athletes.
Keeping an eye on the situation, Kamaru Usman offered respectful advice to the Nerds by pointing out a major flaw in the game of some of their representatives. According to the former champion, hiring a grappling specialist is now extremely necessary.
"They have an incredible team, and I think they could strengthen it, probably with someone who works in wrestling. Having that wrestling experience is something that Caio Borralho could have used it to get those takedowns in the fight, which I think could have helped him and turned the game around. With Carlos Prates, in the fight he lost to Ian Gary, of course Ian was very good at getting away and then maybe falling and getting a takedown, controlling him. Then in the fight against Mauricio Ruffy, Saint Denis was on top of him the whole time. Once he took him down, he was able to punish him down there,” Usman said in Pound4Pound.

Finally, Usman compared his trajectory in MMA and highlighted great names that helped him hone his wrestling skills.
“So I think these guys would definitely benefit from a wrestling coach. We had Greg (Jones) at one point. We had Kenny Monday at one point. We had Mike van Arsdale at one point. Our team, I think our foundation was when we were the Blackzilians, was great. What they did really well was that Rashad evans insisted on having a wrestling coach, because, obviously, you know Rashad is a wrestler too. We had to have a wrestling coach because everyone knew our stand-up was really good back then, thanks to coach Henri Hooft. That's something the Fighting Nerds can use: getting a good wrestling coach," he concluded.

Despite this statement, Fighting Nerds currently features Flávio Álvaro, a former fighter and specialist in ground-and-pound and grappling. The academy, despite its public statement after losses, has not mentioned any plans to hire anyone to assist in a specific area of the fight.
