Charles do Bronx opens up about his strategy at UFC Rio: 'My plan is not to take him down'

Former champion says his focus is on making history in the octagon, respecting his opponent and not getting caught up in grappling strategies.

Charles do Bronx is ready to make history at UFC Rio. After a hard defeatAfter accepting the fight against Ilia Topuria at UFC 317, the former champion caught the attention of fans by accepting to face Rafael Fiziev with little recovery time. Although many believe that the ideal strategy to defeat the Kyrgyz fighter is to use jiu-jitsu, the champion is focused on something else.

In a live Instagram broadcast, Charles do Bronx stated that his goal in the UFC Rio fight goes beyond simply trying to take down Rafael Fiziev. The former champion showed respect for his opponent and emphasized that he is not tied to any particular strategy, but rather focused on making history.

“Actually, my plan isn’t to take him down; my plan is to make history. My plan is to have a great fight. He’s a very tough guy and deserves a lot of respect, like anyone else. He’s fought against big names, just like I have. But we are MMA fighters. I’m not focused on: ‘what’s the strategy to take him down?’ No. I want to fight. I want to do what I’ve always gone into this to do: make history,” said Charles do Bronx.

After dominating Michael Chandler at UFC 309, Charles Oliveira had the chance to reclaim the lightweight title (up to 70,3 kg) against Ilia Topuria at UFC 317. However, the Brazilian was knocked out in the first round. Now, the former champion seeks to return to winning ways in front of his home crowd and faces Rafael Fiziev at UFC Rio, scheduled for October 11th.
