Merab Dvalishvili lands 20 takedowns and beats Sandhagen at UFC 320
Merab Dvalishvili started the fight using hand feints, changing levels and dominating the center of the octagon. Cory Sandhagen, in turn, circled the cage, relying on counter-attacks. In the second minute of the fight, the athletes clashed in an exchange of blows, and the Georgian took advantage of the moment to attempt his first takedown — however, the American quickly got back up.
Back in the exchanges, the challenger landed some good strikes, taking advantage of his greater reach, and even attempted a flying knee, which ended up being unsuccessful.
In the second round, Merab wasted no time in quickly demonstrating his wrestling credentials, taking Sandhagen down within the first minute. However, the fight quickly returned to the feet. Undeterred, the champion charged forward, unleashed a series of crosses that rocked his opponent, and then landed five consecutive takedowns—all defended by Sandhagen, who refused to stay down.
At the start of the third round, Merab was already closing in on Cory again, but the American managed to defend the attack. The rest of the round maintained the same tone: the champion seeking single and double leg entries, while Sandhagen repeatedly fell and got back up.
The fourth round began with Sandhagen trying to fight back and make up for lost time. The American attempted a kick early on, but was grabbed and taken down by the Georgian. Unable to maintain control on the ground, Merab allowed the fight to return to the feet and, after a brief exchange of blows, pressed the challenger against the fence again, landing another takedown.
In the final stretch of the round, it was Sandhagen who sought the clinch, but the champion surprised him with a beautiful judo takedown, sending his opponent crashing headfirst to the ground. In the final seconds, the Georgian attempted a choke, but time ran out before he could finish.
In the final round, Merab maintained his impressive pace, constantly advancing and showing no signs of fatigue. The champion continued to take down his opponent until the bell rang, allowing no real reaction.
At the end of the fight, Merab Dvalishvili retained the belt by unanimous decision of the judges and also broke the record for landed takedowns in the UFC, totaling 20 in the fight and 117 in his career.
