After becoming the new light heavyweight champion (up to 93kg) in UFC 320, Alex Poatán surprised many MMA fans by declaring that instead of defending his belt, his desire was to move up to heavyweight (up to 120,2 kg) to have a super fight against Jon Jones. Despite the intention, the fighter respects the moment experienced by the North American, who has just suffered the death of his 39-year-old brother.
Keeping an eye on the situation, the former victim and also Poatan's partner, Sean Strickland didn't hesitate to weigh in on a potential duel between the sport's legends. Contrary to popular belief, the former middleweight champion (up to 83,9 kg) acknowledged the Brazilian's chances of overcoming the challenges posed by Jones and ultimately triumphing.

“If there is anyone who can win Jon Jones, that someone is Alex. Jon knows how to wrestle, he has an absurd level of athleticism, but even so, Alex could make history,” Strickland said during an interview with MMAJunkie.
So far, Jones has not commented on Poatan's challenge. The American's only reaction was to acknowledge and respect the Brazilian's request for silence, to express his condolences for the passing of Arthur Jones.

When asked about his interest in a fight, Dana White was hesitant, but ultimately expressed optimism about the new light heavyweight champion's chances of supporting a weight class change. UFC Casa Branca is scheduled to take place in June 2026.
