Edson Barboza was knocked out by Jailin Turner in the first round on Saturday night (6), in a fight valid for the lightweight category (up to 70,3 kg), during the preliminary card of UFC 323. With the result, the 39-year-old veteran suffered his third consecutive defeat in the biggest MMA event in the world, while the American returned to the win column in his return from his brief retirement.

The fight began at a measured pace. While Barboza moved laterally, Turner sought to dominate the center of the cage. After landing some good long-range kicks, the Brazilian went on the offensive with punches, but this strategy did not yield good results.

He was countered with punches and elbows and was nearly knocked out, in addition to suffering a deep cut on his forehead. Despite breaking free, he began absorbing heavy punches against the cage and was eventually knocked out by the American, who landed precise punches and forced referee Herb Dean to stop the fight at two minutes and 24 seconds.

Visibly emotional, Turner expressed his happiness at not giving up on his dream of becoming a professional fighter and took the opportunity to motivate those present and advise them to persevere in their dreams. He also said he remained very focused throughout the fight, a crucial factor in achieving victory.
