The fight began at a measured pace. While Barboza moved laterally, Turner sought to dominate the center of the cage. After landing some good long-range kicks, the Brazilian went on the offensive with punches, but this strategy did not yield good results.

He was countered with punches and elbows and was nearly knocked out, in addition to suffering a deep cut on his forehead.
