Away from the octagon indefinitely, Ilia Topuria may be close to returning to the world's biggest MMA event. Through an Instagram post this Thursday (5), the fighter hinted that he will return to training soon. Amid a legal battle with his ex-wife Giorgina Badell, the current lightweight champion (up to 70,3 kg) has not competed since June of last year, when he knocked out Charles do Bronx during the first round of the main fight of UFC 317 and became the new champion of the category.

In the post, the Georgian/Spanish fighter simply wrote that "the champion is back." The post features a carousel of photos and videos in which Topuria hones his striking skills with mitt training, as well as weightlifting with pelvic thrusts and squats.

El Matador's hiatus led the UFC to create an interim belt, which was won by Justin Gaethje at UFC 324. In addition to El Matador, the division will also have another major fight in the short term with the rematch between Max Holloway and Charles Oliveira for the BMF title in early March.
