The fighter is seeking over US$50 in damages (more than R$257 at the current exchange rate). According to the lawsuit, he suffered physical and material damages from his rival's aggression. On that occasion, Masvidal punched Covington after discovering he was in town. Covington lost a tooth and had a watch broken. After the incident, Masvidal was arrested and later released.

According to the lawsuit, the assault occurred in such a way that Covington had no opportunity to defend himself. Furthermore, Masvidal allegedly acted with accomplices and attempted to conceal his face to avoid being recognized by his adversary.
Covington and Masvidal had an intense rivalry in the UFC.

Masvidal and Covington were great friends while training together at American Top Team. However, over the years the relationship deteriorated, largely due to Chaos's change in persona, as he became one of the organization's main villains and directed harsh words at various personalities in the sport while excelling in the welterweight division (up to 77,1 kg). Even after the fight, the two maintained a hostile atmosphere towards each other, being restrained by security inside the octagon.
