In the first fight of the night, Kai Kamaka III He put up a great fight and beat Dakota Hope by split decision in a duel in the lightweight division (up to 70,3 kg). The triumph marked the fighter's return to the Ultimate after almost five years. He had competed in the company between 2020 and 2021, being fired after three unsuccessful fights. The Hawaiian, who now has two wins in the world's largest MMA organization, dedicated the victory to his wife, who had her birthday this Saturday (4).
Hope drew attention for his physical dominance from the start of the fight. Despite demonstrating skill at long range, his most impactful attacks undoubtedly came in the clinch, both with short elbows to the head and powerful knees to the midsection. Far from being intimidated, Kamaka also had good moments counter-attacking with quick combinations of punches and low kicks.
The highlight of the first round came after an unintentional clash of heads, which ultimately benefited Hope. He charged forward and landed powerful hammerfists on the side of Kamaka's head. The Hawaiian managed to recover and stay in the fight until the end of the round. The stand-up exchanges remained very violent in the second round, with Kai showing great resilience in dealing with his opponent's intensity. In the final part of the second round, he began to focus on body shots, which visibly diminished his opponent's power.
Hope's greater fatigue made the difference in Kmamara's favor, who spent the final round landing short elbows in the clinch and good combinations with body and head strikes. It was at this moment that Dakota showed his adaptability to take his opponent to the ground with a takedown attempt, in addition to launching a final attack.
However, the final attacks weren't enough to turn the fight in Hope's favor. Two judges scored it 29-28 in her favor, while another judge saw the same score favoring Dakota.
