He defended well and managed to get on top, in his opponent's guard. Trapped against the cage, Leavitt successfully locked in a guillotine choke and used it as leverage to get back to his feet and trap the Brazilian against the cage.
From that moment on, he began attacking with knee strikes to the midsection, in addition to occasionally attempting takedowns. Joanderson briefly broke free, but was once again controlled by the cage, making Leavitt's strategy of using isometric holds to exhaust the fighter from Maranhão evident.

It was at this moment that the Brazilian managed to completely change the course of the fight. In the final minute, he went on the offensive after breaking free again, and when attacked with a takedown attempt, he opted for a choke instead of just defending. A few seconds later, the American was forced to tap out at four minutes and 19 seconds.
