Daniel Cormier warns Ian Garry about his plan to dominate Islam Makhachev at UFC 330: 'What matters is winning'

Scheduled to challenge Islam Makhachev for the welterweight title (up to 77,1 kg) in the main event of UFC 330 , Ian Garry expressed confidence by stating that, in an ideal scenario, he intends to dominate the champion for four rounds before seeking a knockout in the final stretch of the fight. However, the statement did not convince Daniel Cormier . The former UFC champion praised the Irishman's self-confidence, but stated that this type of discourse can increase the pressure and ultimately backfire on the fighter.

In a video posted on his YouTube channel, Cormier stated that he sees no problem with the confidence shown by Garry, but believes that the challenger shouldn't adhere to a specific script to win the belt. In the commentator's view, the only aspect that truly matters is leaving the octagon with a victory, regardless of how it happens.

“I love confidence. What I don’t understand is that sometimes a person is mistaken in their reasoning. They are setting the stage for a very bad night or a negative result. I’m not saying that Ian Garry can’t beat Islam. What I’m saying is that you have to face things as they come. It doesn’t matter how you win, what matters is winning,” declared the two-time champion.

In addition to commenting on the Irishman's statements, the American reinforced the magnitude of the challenge Garry will face. The commentator highlighted Makhachev's dominant history in the UFC and stated that, against such an established champion, any opportunity to win the belt should be valued. For the former champion, the most important thing for the challenger is to find a way to win.
