Ian Garry and his team are aware of the challenge they will face at UFC 330. Scheduled for the main event, set for next Saturday (15), the Irishman will fight for the welterweight belt (up to 77 kg) against Islam Makhachev and counts on Demian Maia 's experience to avoid the champion's traps.

In a statement to UFC Countdown, Demian Maia highlighted that Makhachev poses risks in all areas, but pointed to his grappling game as his main weapon. According to the Brazilian, his role in preparing Ian Garry is to help the Irishman minimize his mistakes on the ground to surprise the Russian during the fight.

He has good striking, but mainly, Islam's strength lies in his grappling game: great takedowns, a wide variety of ground positions, and different types of submissions. Makhachev will take advantage of any mistake you make with your elbow, leg, or hip in the wrong direction; he'll catch you. So, all I do is make sure he doesn't make those mistakes,” said Demian Maia.

Although Garry boasts a significant physical advantage, measuring 1,90m tall and 1,88m in reach compared to the champion's 1,78m in both measurements, the Russian holds a considerable advantage in his professional record with 28-1-0. The Irishman attempts to shock the world with a record of 17 wins and only one loss.

The technical matchup pits Garry's striking volume against Makhachev's relentless wrestling. The challenger lands an average of 4,78 significant strikes per minute compared to the champion's 2,45, but will need to test his 80% takedown defense. This is because Makhachev executes approximately 3,10 takedowns every 15 minutes with 56% accuracy, overwhelmingly controlling the action on the ground.
