After the Russian defeated Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 , the Brazilian became a fan favorite to challenge for the welterweight title (up to 77 kg). Despite acknowledging the danger posed by the champion's takedown game, coach Flavio Álvaro is already working on a strategy to surprise him and seek a knockout.
During an appearance on the Connect Cast podcast, Flavio Álvaro projected that Makhachev should study Prates' low kicks and try to take advantage of the moments when the Brazilian attacks to close the distance and execute a takedown. Given this scenario, the coach revealed that he intends to use a knee strike as one of the traps to counter the Russian's takedown attempt.

“I’m sure he’ll map out Prates’ leg kick and try to counter it. When Prates goes to kick, he’ll want to take him down, and that’s when we’ll set the traps. We’ll land a knee to his mouth so hard his teeth will end up in his throat,” said Flavio Álvaro.
