The opportunity to face Armando Tsarukyan came as an unexpected blessing for Mauricio Ruffy's career. With another victory, the Sergipe native would become the leading contender for the lightweight title (up to 70,3 kg), currently held by Justin Gaethje . However, the fight at UFC 331 has also been a tough challenge for the Brazilian.
Fully aware of the great challenge represented by the Armenian fighter, Ruffy revealed some details about his preparation during a press conference at UFC 330. Knowing Tsarukyan's game plan, he assured everyone that he was giving his all.

“The plan is always the same when they're fighting me: come forward, grab me, and take me to the ground. I've been working on that, getting out of my comfort zone. I'm here to become a better fighter. I go to the gym to try to improve and evolve, and this fight is an opportunity to show myself—not anyone else, not even the fans—how my dedication has helped me. I'm still learning about this sport and I like what I see. We'll continue showing that we're still evolving,” stated the fighter, who also made clear his intention to knock out his opponent.
Mauricio Ruffy says the UFC told him it's a “straight shot to the title” with a win over Arman Tsarukyan at #UFC331 :
“That UFC has said it. … That's why I accepted this fight on just over 30 days' notice.”

One of the most dynamic athletes today, Maurício has impressed the MMA world with his fluid striking combined with brutal knockout power. In this context, the fight accepted with only one month's notice could mean a definitive change in his career.
“It’s going to be really cool. It’s going to draw a lot of attention to the fight, that’s why I accepted. I’m giving myself 30 days to prepare, not only for the fight itself, but also for the opportunity. Whoever wins will go straight to fight for the belt. The UFC said so, and Justin Gaethje himself said so,” he concluded.
