While he is a UFC star, Alex Poatan has become an increasingly unpopular figure on the internet due to his constant controversies. The most recent one occurred last Sunday (23). After giving an overly aggressive response to YouTuber Carlos Figueira MMA, many fans disapproved of the former champion's conduct and criticized him fiercely. Even Renato Moicano acknowledged that the fighter has been going too far, but Carlos Prates does not share this view.

In an interview with Gilbert Burns on his YouTube channel, the UFC's top welterweight (up to 77,1 kg) fighter defended Poatan. According to Prates, many who criticize the athlete, sometimes unfairly, also deserve to be heard and held accountable. Therefore, the athlete doesn't understand why many fans are shocked when the veteran decides to respond publicly, because, in his view, his friend, despite his star status, is a person like anyone else, who has the right to express himself and who has good and bad days.
“I think it’s strange, you know, man? How people… Did you see the mess that’s going on with Poatan? Everyone’s talking about him and stuff. Man, I think people kind of misinterpret it, man. You know? I saw a news story, a guy reporting this, the guy said, ‘Oh, Poatan is losing control because he’s getting relegated, because he’s Poatan.’ Man, he’s a normal person, man,” he said.
"If you talk badly about the guy, he might respond, man. You know? But people take it badly when he responds, man. But I don't know, man. Sometimes he, man, is messed up. He, like I said, is a normal person, has normal feelings, like you said, sometimes the comments, the stuff hurts people."
“And, man, it’s Poatan responding, not my neighbor here who’s my friend and, like, has 500 followers on Instagram, you know? It’s Poatan. But I don’t know, man. That’s the way the world is today. Sometimes people go too far, you know? Like, by judging others too much,” he concluded.

Carlos Prates , 32, is one of the top Brazilian fighters currently active in MMA and is on the rise in the UFC. He began his career in the sport in 2012 and debuted for the organization in 2024. Currently, the striker is ranked first in the welterweight division.
