Without Tom Aspinall, still sidelined due to a serious eye injury, the Frenchman was promoted and now leads the prestigious category.

If last Monday (14), Tom Aspinall surprised and gave up the UFC heavyweight title (up to 120,2 kg), now we have a new linear champion. However, the official announcement of Ciryl Gane as the category's owner, which took place last Saturday (19), in California (USA), was not clear. In any case, it only took one day for Dana White to correct the scenario he created.

Since the Englishman was out of action due to a serious eye injury suffered in the fight against 'Bon Gamin' in October, the UFC created the interim belt and put it up for grabs in June at the White House. In that fight, Gane shone and won the valuable title by brutally knocking out Alex Poatan in the second round, thus earning the right to challenge the champion in a rematch.

After months, Aspinall suffered another eye injury in his training and, therefore, relinquished the title so as not to stall the division and harm the athletes. Many therefore imagined that the Frenchman would naturally assume the title as the undisputed champion, but the official, last Friday (18), surprised everyone by denying him the status and stating that he would need to have another fight. Hours later, Dana acknowledged that he had acted prematurely.

"That's right. Nothing. I screwed up," said the executive at the post- UFC 331 press conference.
