For many, the matchup between Ciryl Gane and Josh Hokit at UFC 334, an event taking place on November 14th in New York (USA), was somewhat surprising and even unfair. This is because they expected Alex Poatan to get his long-awaited rematch against the Frenchman. However, in the view of Dana White, president of the organization, there is no reason for any controversy.

In a conversation with journalists, when questioned about why the Brazilian fighter hadn't received a rematch and, consequently, hadn't been scheduled to fight for the heavyweight title (up to 120,2 kg), Dana White pointed out that the duel between Gane and the "bad boy" makes perfect sense. It's worth noting that Hokit is undefeated in MMA and riding a four-fight win streak in the UFC.
On the other hand, in his debut in the category, Poatan was brutally knocked out by 'Bon Gamin' in the second round in June. It's true that, since then, the Brazilian, unable to accept the defeat, blamed referee Herb Dean and complained about the illegal blows applied by Gane, and did everything to obtain an immediate rematch. However, Dana downplayed the veteran's complaint again and stressed that he was already outmatched.
“But you’re the one asking me this question. Where does this question come from? What do you think we should have done? Could he have gotten the rematch because of what? Star power? Do we base fights on star power? Do we base fights on who is the best in the world, who deserves to be there?”
“He’s coming off a loss against Gane. This is the fight to make. If I do the rematch, we all saw the fight and it wasn’t like, ‘Holy shit! It was a knockdown and the fans are demanding a rematch.’ So, yeah.”
