UFC president, Dana White, stated today (12) at the UFC 124 press conference that the organization's newly signed, Jake Shields, is very close to challenging for the welterweight title. Shields' UFC debut will be against the Dane Martin Kampmann in the 121st edition of the event, which takes place on the 23rd.

"Jake Shields He is the first in line for the chance to fight for the welterweight belt. If he beats Martin Kampmann, he will probably be the next challenger for the category title,” said White.

Upon signing with the UFC last July, Shields was the current Strikeforce middleweight champion, having previously held the Shooto middleweight and now-defunct EliteXC welterweight belts. The fighter is undefeated for 14 fights and has victories over renowned MMA athletes such as Paul Daley and Dan Henderson.

The current UFC welterweight champion is Canadian Georges St-Pierre, who will compete for his belt against the American Josh koscheck on December 11th at UFC 124, which will be held in Canada. If he becomes a challenger for the belt, Shields will face the winner of this fight.
